My Marketing Strategy Journey
From an early age, I’ve demonstrated a passion for both capturing and telling stories. I graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism. As online communication channels increased in popularity, I went back to school and received a Master’s degree in Public Communication from American University.
With my shiny Master’s degree in hand, I started my professional career as a Content Marketer for an education learning management system. After a few years producing sales enablement content, I was eager to try something new so I started picking up freelance marketing and sales projects.
As a freelancer, I developed organic social media content for a luxury baby brand/e-commerce retailer. I executed lifecycle email marketing campaigns for a stock media subscription service. And I exceeded quota as an inside sales representative at a cloud-based infrastructure licensing and implementation partner.
I eventually settled back into a full-time role as a Marketing Manager at a local start-up, developing the go-to-market strategy for a special education SaaS product. But like so many start-up rockets, the product failed to launch, funding was cut, and the product was absorbed. So I jumped to the dark-side – er, agency-side – where I crafted and pitched multi-channel marketing strategies for a roster of clients.
Spinning up cross-channel marketing strategies was a professional dream-come-true, but I felt limited by the manual-ness of it all. So I moved into a marketing strategy consulting role for an enterprise-level marketing technology implementation partner. I worked with clients to craft email journeys, personalized user experiences, and marketing automation solutions for technical products, consumer brands, and professional services.
Although I loved the excitement of working with new clients, learning about different types of businesses, and experimenting with new marketing technologies, I was ready to settle into a role focused on developing strategy and managing a team. I landed at a company that publishes news media and offers a data aggregation SaaS solution for the logistics industry.
Unfortunately, the demands of a management position for an online media start-up coupled with raising two school-aged kids became more than I could handle. So I’ve since transitioned back into a Content Strategist role, producing multimedia content for an engineering consulting firm.
